Product Information

In his own day Caesar excited both admiration and revulsion. Abusing his power as consul, he ran afoul of the Senate in 59 B.C. and the next year embarked, without the Senate's authority, on a bloody war of aggression in Gaul, which he subjugated and impoverished, largely for his own glory. Honored, nevertheless for his unwanted conquests, Caesar was also threatened with prosecution for unconstitutional conduct during his consulship. To save his political existence, he plunged Rome into a civil war that soon spread throughout the Mediterranean world.

    I expect the book to live up to its impressive title. I'm glad it's not a history, weighed down with footnotes and references.

    I haven't read it page for page yet, but it looks every bit what I expected. I'm looking forward to a great read, even though I'm more a fan of Caesar's enemy, Cicero! I had seen that this book is recommended reading - by authors of novels about Ancient Rome.
