Just my opinion..
I used to own the cassette of this back when it first came out and I could never get past the first three songs... because they were bad?... No, because they were fantastic and I could never stop rewinding and replaying them over and over until the tape literally snapped! This compilation/tribute album review is based solely on the strong trio of covers that opens this cd: R.e.m.'s "First we take Manhattan", Ian Mcculloch's (of Echo & The Bunnymen) "Hey that's no way to say goodbye" and the Pixies' "I can't forget"... The producers of this cd knew how to get listener's hooked by starting off with these three powerful covers and it works... Maybe abit too well! I just purchased this disc used here on Ebay and when I put it on I thought I had developed the maturity to be able to listen to ... One song on this cd is totally awsome, Hallelujah by John Cale, it is soulful and very true to the manner in which Lenord Cohen wrote his music. The remainder of the renditions are not so remarkable. Since Cohen fans know his work, it really is hard to hear some of the interpretations by others. By the way, Pixies, though I love your name, please, DO FORGET. This was NOT the ideal Cohen piece for you. On my disc, songs #1 & 10 were reversed, though I did enjoy Who By Fire as done by House of Love. As one of the other reviewers said, you may find 3 or 4 enjoyable tracks, so you might not want to spend too much for this cd. Consistantly Very Good.
Overall, Leonard Cohen was one hell of a song/word smith...and though there are no surprizes...though Nick Cave comes close...the entire album works well together. The more i listen...the more i like.
