In 2018 the RAF is one hundred years old. In his new book, destined to be a classic, Patrick Bishop examines the high point of its existence - the Second World War, when the Air Force saved the nation from defeat then led the advance to victory. A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Air warfare required a new military outlook. The RAF stood apart from the traditional services, adopting the quasi-revolutionary idea that competence was more important than background. The early days of the Air Force war were difficult. Then, in 1940, Fighter Command won one of the decisive battles of the struggle. The RAF was gilded with an aura of success that never tarnished, going on to make a vital contribution to Allied victory. Using first-hand sources, Air Force Blue gives the taste of combat in the skies over the Atlantic, the sands of the Western Desert and the jungles of Burma. It also brings to life the intensely lived dramas, romances, friendships and fun that were such an important a part of the experience. Air Force Blue portrays the spirit of the RAF - its heart and soul - during its finest hours. It is essential reading for the millions in Britain and the Commonwealth whose loved ones served, and for anyone who wants to understand the Second World War.

Review

'This is a terrifically readable, authoritative book that told me many fascinating things I did not know' Max Hastings, Sunday Times 'As a former war correspondent with more than 30 years' experience, Bishop brings journalistic strengths to his second career as a popular historian: an easily readable and exciting writing style, a knowledge of what fighting means to those at the sharp end, a nose for the nub of the story, and an admirable compassion for the victims of war on all sides...a book that at once educates, explains, and excites' BBC History magazine, Book of the Month 'Monumental ... after Bishop's pilot's eye views of the war in Fighter Boys and Bomber Boys, Air Force Blue counts as a publishing event. It won't disappoint" The Times 'Compelling ... Mr Bishop has an enormous tale to tell as he leads up to 1939 and six years of formative war...what Mr. Bishop does so well is to show how the RAF came to be such a distinctive and effective force' Country Life 'Full of excellent and vivid stories, this terrifically readable and authoritative book tells the dramatic story of the RAF during the Second World War' The Sunday Times 'This meticulously compiled survey sets out to combine encomium with a series of unblinkered evaluations' TLS 'Succeeds in mining new and startling insights' The Times

5.0 out of 5 stars In this book he covers what it was actually like to be a member of the RAF during WW2

This is the final part of the trilogy that encompasses 'Bomber Boys' and 'Fighter Boys'. Patrick Bishop is one of the most accessible writers when it comes to the history of the RAF. In this book he covers what it was actually like to be a member of the RAF during WW2. Drawing on published and unpublished works, sound archives and official documents he gives an insight into what it was like to serve in the RAF & the WAAF from the highest rank to the lowest in every theatre where the RAF was active. As well as the most well known campaigns such as the Battle of Britain and the work of Bomber Command he looks at the Far East, the Western Desert Air Force and Coastal Command. And most interestingly he gives an insight into areas that don't often feature in many histories, such as leisure time, discipline and sickness. Packed with anecdotes both funny and sad, this is a great finale to the trilogy.

Having to deal with 5 new books at a time and still immersed in "All out war" I have only had time to dip into "Air Force Blue". But that small experience confirms that it i going to be an interesting read. Having done my national service in the RAF as a Fighter Controller I have a personal interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling reading

Wonderful biography of the RAF focussing on WW2 but providing sufficient background from inception to understand the major players during WW2.
Often historical text can be quite dry, but this book is easy to read with accounts taken from diaries providing insights to how those brave young men dealt with the changing face of the war.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing mish-mash of anecdotes and stodgy text

After reading several positive reviews I decided to try this book - unfortunately I have been able to find little to commend the book to anybody else. The book has neither the depth nor quality of writing to qualify as a work of history, while the turgid text that fills the gaps between the (admittedly interesting) anecdotes drags the book back from being a worthwhile eye-witness account into a badly-organised jumble of unfinished stories. As a result, the book is very hard to stay with for any length of time - I'm just scraping to the end of it after picking it up and putting it down for over 6 weeks, having started and finished 5 other books in the same period. In summary, this book falls into the gap between two different types of historical text, and would have been far better with less scope and more depth. I'll give it a second star just on the strength of the eye-witness testimony, but that's more than the overall package really deserves.

interesting book on RAF. Like the bit where in 1944 the USA considered the RAF as a separate entity to Britain and the RAF esteem in US could not be any higher (unlike their opinion of the British Army and Navy).
